An 8-week coaching group to soften the hardest parts of misophonia: less alone, less helpless, less ashamed
By now you've got your ways of surviving it: earplugs, headphones, leaving the room. They're not nothing; they're how you've learned to survive this. They've carried you through meal after meal.
I don't want you to have to keep white-knuckling your way through dinner. You've endured enough. What if enduring wasn't the deal anymore?
This is heavier than anyone around you knows. You don't have to keep proving you can bear it.
First, understanding: What misophonia actually is, and why your reaction was never a flaw. Underneath it, your body is genuinely trying to keep you safe, which is a strange thing to hear when it feels like your body is the problem. So we get into the how and the why, until the reaction makes enough sense that you can stop resenting yourself for having it. We also take a baseline at the start, so later we can see the change.
Then we get to know the reaction from the inside- where the distress lives in your body, the earliest cues, the impulses that rise even before a trigger lands. The point is that you stop getting ambushed by your own nervous system and start to befriend it- working with it, rather than against it.
Underneath all of it is safety- somewhere steady to stand. Before we go anywhere deeper, we gather what resources you: a felt sense of calm, boundaries, protective and nurturing figures, supports both inside you and around you. We never go toward the hard stuff without building the safe place first.
The deepest one. Here we go toward what's actually underneath the sound- the memory where it first got laid down, the people it's hardest with, and the no that got swallowed a long time ago. This is where the shame you've carried meets something truer: your misophonia makes sense. And once you're down there, at the root, something can actually shift- because your body finally gets to put down what it's been carrying.
As these weave together, you grow more resourced and more in control, your tools settled into ordinary life. We look back at where this began together, so we can celebrate the ground you've covered. And for those who feel ready, this steadier place is where deeper work becomes possible, a further, closer round of returning to the unraveling work.
You don't have to arrive sure. Curious and a little wary is a perfectly good way to walk in.
I've had misophonia for most of my life. I know the loneliness of it, the way you learn to hide your reactions and brace against the people you most want to be close to, and the shame and exhaustion that come from holding it all together. For a long time I believed the best I could hope for was to get better at hiding. It turned out there was another way, and finding it changed my life.
I'm a somatic practitioner, and it's an honor to hold groups with this approach. I wish someone had offered me this lens years earlier. It's one that treats your reaction as something that makes sense rather than something to fix. Something that can be tended to, understood, and ultimately softened. What I can promise is this: in group, you won't have to translate your experience for someone standing outside it. I'll be right here in it with you, because it's mine too.
If you're ready to stop managing the sound and start tending what's underneath it, there's a place for you here.
